The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) moved to the GEMS (GCCF EMS) breed coding system in 2014. The codes were introduced to provide a standardized, genetic-based method for describing cat breeds, colors, and patterns, adapted from the FIFe EMS system.
